Making tracks with smaller footprints
The race to be "green" is on. Some companies have a head start, while others are finding their way to the starting line. But this race is not a sprint; it's a marathon.
If businesses want long-term success, they must take strides to improve environmental performance on many fronts. For example, companies can measure and manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to help curb climate change.
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), is a nonprofit organization that is particularly interested in the carbon footprints companies leave behind. CDP annually invites companies to publicly share GHG emission data and holds the largest database of corporate climate change information in the world.
Tellabs responded to the CDP survey for the first time in 2008, reporting on all U.S. locations. Recently Tellabs finished our second CDP response, adding information from major locations outside the U.S., including Finland and China.
Using CDP's methodology helped Tellabs capture our energy use data using an internationally accepted standard. It also helps us consistently measure and better analyze the data.
After reviewing our first two CDP responses, we discovered that we have made progress. For example we estimate that our overall carbon footprint is shrinking, because it only slightly increased with the addition of our international locations.
Completing the CDP annually helps Tellabs learn how it can improve. By measuring our carbon footprint, we can better manage it. And, we can stay in shape for the long haul.
